Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

Anyone who has been told to snap out of their depression will identify with this scene from The Life of Brian. Gotta love Monty Python.

Fourth verse (words and music by Eric Idle):

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

I rest my case.

Is it just me, or do you find that the people who tell you most often to snap out of your depression are mental health workers?

Hey, Daniel. Scroll down to a recent blog piece: Clinicians - The Worst Purveyors of Stigma. :)

I really liked your blog, Monty Python is truly great. But I leave this comment in a state of quiet desperation, like the Pink Floyd song. 16 years of drug addiction (codeine) gradually erased my dreams and undermined my self-esteem. Although I´m way over 30 I got no job, no college education and found myself unable to live on my own since my girlfriend died of overdose in my home last may. I´d like to exchange some info with you.

That was hysterical! You are a very talented man. I was just diagnosed with BD II a few days ago. I'm 51 and have been under psychiatric care for major depression and panic disorder for a few years. My mania finally came to light! I was keeping that tucked in my sleeve just in case the depression didn't lift! Quick note: your parents must have known my in-laws. They were both from Hungry Hill in Springfield. Your great, thks.
