iPhone Photo of the Day - This Just Ain't Right!

That's SNOW in my backyard! What's wrong with this picture? I live in southern CA, about 15 miles from the Mexican border, that's what. Granted, I'm 3,500 feet up, but still, this is a clear case of climate oppositional defiant behavior.

One week ago, my nephew and I were in our T-shirts, drinking root beer floats outside at the San Diego Zoo.

What has the world come to? I'm in denial. This is NOT snow. It CAN'T possibly be snow. No way.

Someone call my psychiatrist.

Snow!

This is a view of Mt Cuyamaca, taken 20 minutes ago from a web cam on a private ranch a few miles up the road from where I live, 40 miles east of San Diego. The web cam is at 3,400 feet and Mt Cuyamaca, at 6,512 feet, is the dominant landmark in our neighborhood.

Yesterday, in the hills, we experienced a blast of cold weather. The temperature outside my door at the moment is a frigid (by southern CA standards) 49 degrees. No snow on the ground here, of course. I'm content to simply stand outside and admire it at a distance.

Snow!

I returned home late tonight from a meeting to find about a quarter inch of snow had infested our yard. What is wrong with this picture? I'm living in southern California about ten miles from the Mexican border, that's what.

But I'm 3,500 feet up in the mountains and once a year or so Ol' Man Winter really lets loose. The snow will be gone ten minutes after the sun hits it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here's 24 seconds of video I shot six days before Christmas, a bit deeper into the mountains, about seven or eight miles from where I live. I like to refer to it as "optional snow." The type you can drive out to at your discretion.

Enjoy ...

Zen addendum, next morning: If the snow has melted when you wake up, has it really snowed?
